Presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to take immediate action against perpetrators of violence across Nigeria, insisting that those responsible for ings and kidnappings are identifiable and must be stopped. The National Democratic Congress candidate made these remarks during a Tuesday visit to an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Prayer alone won’t solve Nigeria’s security crisis. While acknowledging the importance of spiritual intervention, Obi stressed that concrete government action was essential. “The people who are coming to people are not from the moon. We know them,” he said bluntly. “The Nigerian government should be able to deal with it.”
The former Anambra State governor expressed alarm at the scale of displacement in Plateau, where approximately 45,000 people from over 20 communities have been forced from their homes. He described the continued existence of IDP camps as fundamentally unacceptable, arguing that displaced citizens should receive assistance to return safely to their communities rather than languish in temporary shelters.
Obi clarified that his visit wasn’t politically motivated. He came to offer solidarity and reassurance to victims of insecurity, particularly children whose education has been disrupted by violence. Despite witnessing their hardships, he praised the resilience of displaced persons who still found strength to sing and dance.
