Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has described his 89th birthday as a moment of gratitude to God emphasizing that the celebration is more about appreciating divine grace than counting age.
Obasanjo made the remarks during his 89th birthday celebration and the maiden Founders Day of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Ogun State.
According to the former president longevity should be seen as a blessing and an opportunity for individuals to continue contributing meaningfully to society and humanity. He stressed that age should never be used as a measure of relevance or ability to make a positive impact.
Age is just a number Obasanjo said while noting that the day was primarily about thanking God for the grace of life and service.
The event also featured the graduation of ten school principals and vice principals from Ogun and Oyo states who completed a three month training programme in School Leadership and Management at the leadership institute. The programme was designed to strengthen leadership capacity within the education sector.
Several prominent dignitaries attended the ceremony including Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun his deputy Noimot Salako Oyedele former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso former Anambra State governor Peter Obi former Ogun State governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun as well as political economist Pat Utomi.
Speaking on the challenges facing Africa Obasanjo said the continent is not lacking in resources but rather in visionary leadership capable of transforming societies and strengthening institutions.
He explained that Africa possesses vast human and natural resources but often struggles with leadership deficits which contribute to corruption weak institutions and limited opportunities for young people.
Obasanjo encouraged the graduating participants to become ambassadors of integrity and responsible leadership noting that one well prepared leader with vision discipline and integrity can transform communities institutions and even entire nations.
Governor Dapo Abiodun also praised the former president describing him as a symbol of leadership public service and national responsibility. He noted that reforms introduced during Obasanjo presidency from 1999 to 2007 helped strengthen Nigeria economy and public institutions.
Traditional ruler Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo the Alake of Egbaland also described Obasanjo as a role model whose contributions will continue to inspire generations across Nigeria and Africa.
