The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress in Anambra State.
Obi completed his registration in his hometown of Agulu located in Anaocha Local Government Area, marking a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Also formally joining the party is the senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Victor Umeh. Umeh registered and received his membership card at his country home in Aguluzigbo, also within Anaocha Local Government Area.
The registration ceremony attracted several prominent stakeholders of the party in the state. Among those present were Ben Obi, the National Organizing Secretary of the party Chinedu Idigo, and the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency Afam Ogene.
Other attendees included Peter Anekwe, who represents Anambra East and Anambra West Federal Constituency, and Lilian Orogbu, the member representing Awka South and Awka North Federal Constituency.
Also present were the party’s candidate in the last Anambra State governorship election John Nwosu and his running mate Ndubuisi Nwobu, alongside hundreds of party members and supporters.
Ahead of the registration exercise, the party distributed about 48,900 membership cards to leaders across the 21 local government areas of the state. The cards are expected to be distributed across the 326 wards in the state to facilitate grassroots membership registration and expand the party’s base.
Speaking at the event, party leaders including Ben Obi, Victor Umeh and Lilian Orogbu called for aggressive mobilisation of supporters to strengthen the party’s presence across Anambra State.
They also expressed strong support for Obi’s potential presidential ambition in the 2027 general elections and encouraged party members and residents of the state to rally behind him.
Umeh noted that Anambra State has about 2.8 million registered voters and urged them to support Obi’s political vision as preparations gradually begin for the next presidential race.
