British Foreign Secretary Miliband Leads International Sanctions on Israeli Settlements

Britain has led an international coalition of a dozen countries in imposing trade sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank, sparking a fierce diplomatic row with Jerusalem. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband accused Israel of allowing illegal settlements and failing to stop what he described as “ethnic cleansing” and violence against Palestinian communities.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar didn’t hold back. He slammed the British government’s decision as “morally distorted” and declared the move “hostile”, announcing Israel would close its consulate in East Jerusalem in response. The timing couldn’t be more sensitive, with Israeli elections scheduled for October 27 and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu facing criticism from political rivals over the international backlash.

Countries including Canada, Denmark, France and Sweden joined Britain in backing the trade measures. Miliband told parliament that while Israel had the right to defend itself against terrorism, this didn’t justify the scale of destruction in Gaza, where he said more than 70,000 people have been ed. British diplomats reportedly described the sanctions as “largely symbolic”, acknowledging they won’t fundamentally alter Britain’s wider relationship with Israel.

The controversy intensified as demonstrations linked to far-right activist Tommy Robinson targeted migrants in Dover and Portsmouth this week. Meanwhile, Conservative defector Tim Montgomerie resigned from Reform UK after being suspended last month, though his departure centres on internal party tensions rather than foreign policy disputes.
