The diaspora arm of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy has raised concerns over what it described as a growing pattern of intimidation and security threats against former presidential candidate Peter Obi, warning that such developments could undermine Nigeria democratic ility.

In a statement signed by Dr Ben Chukwu, Director of COPDEM in Diaspora and Convener of Professionals for Good Governance and Social Justice, the group alleged that recent incidents and political rhetoric directed at Obi have escalated beyond the bounds of normal democratic rivalry.

The coalition claimed that Obi has faced restrictions and security warnings in certain states, which it said were attempts to limit his political engagements. It also referenced what it described as a serious security incident in Edo State involving Obi convoy, alleging that armed individuals ed his movement. However, the group did not provide independent evidence and called for a thorough investigation into the alleged .

COPDEM further accused the All Progressives Congress of fostering a climate of hostility toward opposition figures. As of the time of this report, the ruling party had not publicly responded to the specific allegations.

The group called on Nigeria security agencies, including the Department of State Services, to investigate individuals it claims may have prior knowledge of the alleged threats. It urged authorities to guarantee equal security protection for all political actors, regardless of party affiliation.

In addition, COPDEM appealed to the international community to closely monitor political developments in Nigeria, cautioning that rising political tensions could have broader implications for democratic governance and national ility.
