President Bola Tinubu has declared insecurity and poverty as national emergencies, describing them as serious threats to jobs, productivity, and national ility. The announcement was made during the 2026 Workers Day celebration in Abuja, where organised labour issued stark warnings about the country’s direction.
Represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, the president said the government is taking urgent and deliberate steps to tackle both challenges. He stressed that decent work cannot exist in an environment where workers fear for their lives or struggle to meet basic needs.
He also highlighted initiatives such as the Community Protection Guards, which has engaged thousands of youths to improve local security while creating employment.
Across the country, state governors echoed calls for unity and productivity. Governors including Chukwuma Soludo, Seyi Makinde, and Sheriff Oborevwori urged workers to remain committed while promising continued reforms and improved welfare.
However, labour leaders painted a more troubling picture. Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress President Festus Osifo warned that Nigeria is nearing a breaking point. They described rising poverty, worsening insecurity, and weak institutions as signs of a failing system.
According to labour, economic growth figures do not reflect the hardship faced by citizens. They argued that wealth remains concentrated among a small elite while the majority struggle daily. They also warned that workers may be forced to stay home if insecurity continues to threaten lives.
The unions called for immediate economic relief, a living wage, and stronger governance. They insisted that without urgent action, the nation risks deeper inility.
