Residents of Mafarafara village in South Africa’s Limpopo province have been cut off from vital healthcare services after their only link to a nearby clinic collapsed under the weight of recent torrential rains. The makeshift bridge spanning the Tubatse River, constructed from wooden logs, sticks and corrugated iron sheets, gave way last week.
The collapse has left villagers with two difficult choices. They can either risk swimming across the swollen river or pay more than R100 for alternative transport to reach medical facilities. For many in this remote community, neither option is ideal.
What does it say about infrastructure priorities when communities must rely on structures cobbled together from scrap materials? The bridge, though unsafe, provided the only practical connection between several isolated villages and essential services. Its failure has once again exposed the harsh reality facing rural South Africans.
Local residents say they’ve been pleading for a permanent solution for years. The temporary structure served its purpose but was never designed to withstand severe weather conditions. Now, with the river at dangerous levels, even the bravest are reluctant to attempt a crossing.
Community leaders are calling on provincial authorities to expedite construction of a proper bridge before the situation worsens further.
