President Donald Trump has threatened to report NBC News journalist Kristen Welker to the Federal Communications Commission, escalating his ongoing battle with the media. The 80-year-old president took to Truth Social on August 30 to announce his intention to file a complaint against the Meet the Press moderator over her coverage of his political endorsement record.
What exactly set off the president? Welker had characterized Trump’s endorsement record as showing “mixed results” during her broadcast. Trump disputed this assessment, claiming a 100% success rate for Senate endorsements and 98% for House races, citing recent wins by Darline Graham and Mike Mazzei. He accused Welker of “purposeful inaccuracy” and promised she would face “rebuke or punishment.”
NBC News stood firmly behind their journalist. A spokesperson told reporters that “Kristen is one of the best in the business and we stand by her.” The network’s response came despite the president’s public threat, though legal experts note the FCC has limited authority to take action against individual journalists.
The confrontation isn’t new territory for these two. Trump walked out of a June 7 Meet the Press interview after Welker challenged his unsubstantiated claims about California primary elections being “rigged.” That same weekend, Trump also weighed in on data center construction across America, warning communities that rejected such projects would “end up being backwards and poor.”
