Trump Administration Expands Third Country Deportations to Africa as Migration Policy Intensifies

The Trump administration has deported more than 100 people from Afghanistan, Cuba, Nicaragua and other nations to eight African countries over a recent 10-day period, according to internal U.S. government documents. Three Immigration and Customs Enforcement flights sent dozens of men and women to Burundi, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Liberia, Rwanda and Sierra Leone.

None of them were from those countries. The deportees included individuals from Iran, Nepal, Turkey and Venezuela, as well as African detainees sent to nations other than their own under expanding third country agreements.

What exactly are these receiving countries getting in return? More than 30 nations worldwide have signed deals with Washington to accept such deportations, including several in Latin America like Costa Rica, Panama and Paraguay. The agreements remain largely secret, though reporting suggests some countries like Ghana and Sierra Leone only accept deportees from other African nations. Others, including Eswatini and the Central African Republic, receive detainees from Latin America, Europe and Asia.

The policy raises serious concerns. Several receiving nations, among them the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, face ongoing armed conflict, political inility and documented human rights abuses. Critics argue that sending vulnerable individuals to countries with no connection to them, particularly those experiencing humanitarian crises, creates dangerous situations for deportees who lack language ss, family networks or legal protection in their destination countries.
