Rosie O’Donnell Reflects on Two Decades of Public Feuding With Trump

Comedian Rosie O’Donnell has described her lengthy public battle with President Donald Trump as surreal and deeply unusual, likening the conflict to two decades of being used as a presidential punchline. Speaking from her new home in Ireland, O’Donnell told People magazine that the persistence of their feud defies belief, particularly given Trump’s position as leader of the free world. Her comments arrive amid ongoing tensions between the celebrity and the president, who continue to exce barbs despite an ocean between them.

The origins of their conflict trace back to 2006, when O’Donnell served as a co-host on the daytime talk show “The View.” During that time, she publicly criticized Trump as a “snake oil salesman” in connection with his ownership of the Miss USA pageant. What might have remained a fleeting television moment instead ignited a war of words that has persisted across two decades, spanning Trump’s transition from reality television personality to real estate mogul to twice elected president. Few celebrity feuds have demonstrated such longevity or evolved through such dramatic shifts in power dynamics.

O’Donnell relocated to Ireland in 2025 as Trump began his second term in the White House, citing the American political climate as a primary motivation for leaving. Since her departure, Trump has repeatedly threatened to revoke her birthright citizenship, escalating what began as entertainment industry squabbling into a matter touching on constitutional rights and presidential authority. O’Donnell acknowledged that distance from constant American news coverage has allowed her to feel “softer” and more like her former self, though she finds it strange to count “supposedly the most powerful man in the world” as her arch nemesis.

Reflecting on the improbability of their ongoing conflict, O’Donnell described the scenario as soing too absurd for fiction. She noted that if someone had pitched a screenplay about a stand-up comic mocking a reality show host who later becomes president and obsesses over her for 20 years, it would be dismissed as unbelievable. Yet that fantastical premise has become her lived reality, a situation she characterizes as “very trippy.” O’Donnell also suggested she has grown somewhat numb to presidential s, saying that Trump’s statements about her no longer carry the same shocking impact they once did.

Recent weeks have provided fresh fuel for their ongoing conflict. In early July, Trump posted an AI generated video to social media depicting himself as a doctor treating various celebrities, including O’Donnell, for what he terms “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Trump has long deployed this phrase to describe critics he believes are irrationally opposed to his policies and persona. O’Donnell fired back days later in an interview, calling Trump “the worst thing that ever happened to our country” and describing his presidency as an abomination.

As Trump continues his second term and O’Donnell settles into life abroad, their feud shows no signs of resolution. What began as a disagreement between two entertainment personalities has morphed into a case study of how personal conflicts can endure and escalate when one participant ascends to the highest office in the land. Whether this peculiar chapter of American political culture will ever reach a conclusion remains uncertain, but for now it stands as one of the more bizarre footnotes in modern presidential history.
