US President Donald Trump delighted patrons at his Doonbeg hotel in County Clare on Saturday night when he walked through the residents’ bar, sparking spontaneous chants of ‘USA’ and ‘four more years’. The unexpected appearance came during his visit to watch the final day of the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament.
Trump smiled and waved. Flanked by security personnel, the president stopped briefly to exce words with several guests as they sang Fields of Athenry in a show of Irish hospitality. A reporter captured the moment on video, showing the festive atmosphere inside the bar.
Earlier that day, golf fans at Trump International Golf Links witnessed a dramatic entrance as Air Force One conducted a flyby shortly before 2pm. The president’s Marine One helicopter then touched down near the course, interrupting Shane Lowry’s putting session. Lowry currently leads the tournament by four strokes.
Trump attended alongside Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Sports Minister Patrick O’Donovan, and Minister of State for Sport Charlie McConalogue. The president told reporters he loves Irish people, responding to questions about his controversial comments supporting a united Ireland made during a Dublin press conference. His sons Eric and Donald Jr. accompanied him to a private viewing platform at the 18th green, where he spent the afternoon watching the competition.
The visit included a scheduled dinner with golfer Rory McIlroy on Saturday evening, which McIlroy confirmed to reporters beforehand.
