American military forces struck targets across southern Iran on Tuesday, ing at least two civilians at a wedding ceremony and wounding over 20 others in the town of Kuhestak. The marks an abrupt end to a month without military action between the two countries and threatens to escalate an intermittent conflict that has stretched beyond six months.
U.S. Central Command said the strikes targeted Iranian positions after Tehran attempted to commercial shipping and American forces in the Middle East. President Donald Trump added that US forces struck Iran’s radar installations. Iranian state media, however, reported hits on civilian sites including an airport along the southern coast.
What’s driving this renewed escalation? The fighting comes after Trump appeared to shift strategy last month toward economic sanctions rather than military action. That brief pause has now shattered.
An investigation by conflict monitoring group Airwars examined earlier February strikes in Lamerd that ed at least 21 civilians, including seven children. The watchdog found that new US precision missiles scattered tungsten pellets far beyond their intended blast zones. Tehran has accused Washington of war crimes since hostilities began, with civilian deaths reportedly reaching 3,000.
Iran responded to Tuesday’s strikes with missile and drone fire, signaling the conflict’s dangerous momentum shows no signs of slowing.
