Haaland Winner Wrongly Allowed As VAR Controversy Mars Manchester Derby

Erling Haaland’s match-winning goal for Manchester City against Manchester United has been confirmed as incorrectly allowed following an official review by Professional Game Match Officials. The Norwegian striker’s 60th-minute volley at Old Trafford sealed victory for City despite playing with 10 men, but it shouldn’t have counted.

The controversy began when referee Michael Oliver issued a straight red card to Phil Foden in the 23rd minute for a high kick to Bruno Fernandes’ midsection. Down a man, City battled through before Josko Gvardiol delivered a cross that deflected off Patrick Dorgu to Haaland at the far post. The assistant referee flagged for offside initially. A two-minute VAR check overturned the decision.

Pro Ref’s statement acknowledged the error. The body responsible for Premier League refereeing confirmed the incident required an on-field monitor review by the head referee, which never happened. Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand slammed the decision on social media, pointing out that Lisandro Martinez went to defend Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position and attempted to play the ball.

What made the situation more frustrating for United? Manager Michael Carrick’s side failed to create enough chances against 10 men. Ferdinand didn’t spare his former club, questioning both tactics and player performance despite the officiating controversy that dominated post-match discussion.
