Tinubu’s Spokesman Dismisses Peter Obi Interview as PR Disaster, Questions Election Claims

Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu, has launched a scathing critique of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi following his appearance on Channels Television, describing the interview as a public relations catastrophe that exposed fundamental flaws in the opposition politician’s narrative. The presidential spokesman claims he switched off his television just thirty minutes into the Sunday program, unable to continue watching what he characterized as a deeply problematic performance by the Labour Party presidential candidate.

Onanuga’s statement, released on Monday, zeroed in on two specific moments from the interview that he found particularly objectionable. When journalist Seun Okinbaloye questioned Obi about his history of moving between political parties, the former governor allegedly attempted to deflect criticism by comparing his political journey to that of President Tinubu. Onanuga dismissed this comparison as fundamentally dishonest, arguing that Tinubu has maintained ideological consistency throughout his political career since entering party politics in 1991 and 1992. According to the presidential spokesman, Tinubu began with the Social Democratic Party, winning a Senate seat with the highest vote count ever recorded by any candidate in the country at that time, and has remained on what he described as a progressive political path ever since.

The distinction Onanuga sought to draw centered on what he portrayed as Obi’s pattern of jumping between ideologically disparate parties for political convenience, contrasting this with Tinubu’s supposedly steady commitment to progressive politics. Such accusations of political nomadism have long been a vulnerability for Obi, who has indeed moved through several party platforms during his political career. Critics have previously questioned whether these transitions reflected opportunism or genuine evolution in political thinking, and Onanuga’s comments suggest this line of will remain central to government messaging as the 2027 election cycle approaches.

Perhaps more provocatively, Onanuga challenged Obi’s persistent claims of having won the 2023 presidential election, a narrative that continues to resonate with the candidate’s substantial social media following. According to the presidential spokesman, Obi finished third in that contest and would have performed even worse were it not for strong ethnic bloc voting from his southeastern base. Onanuga expressed surprise that more than three years after the Supreme Court dismissed Obi’s election petition, the politician continues to dispute the outcome and maintains what the spokesman characterized as a delusional belief in a victory that never occurred.

The presidential aide accused Obi of falling into a trap when Okinbaloye asked directly whether he believed the election had been rigged against him, suggesting the candidate’s affirmative response revealed an inability to accept political defeat. While acknowledging that Obi performed creditably for a politician with limited party infrastructure beyond vocal online supporters, Onanuga urged him to accept what he termed the stark reality of his loss and stop entertaining fantasies of victory. Such blunt language reflects the increasingly personal nature of Nigerian political discourse as the country moves c to another electoral cycle.

Obi’s television appearance and the subsequent response from the presidency have generated intense debate across Nigerian social media platforms, with supporters and detractors of both figures trading accusations and interpretations. For Obi’s base, his continued questioning of the 2023 results represents principled refusal to accept what they view as electoral manipulation, while government supporters see it as deilizing denial of democratic outcomes. The exce underscores the deep polarization that has characterized Nigerian politics in recent years, with little common ground emerging between competing political camps.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, exces like this one signal what promises to be an intensely combative campaign season. Whether Obi can expand his appeal beyond his core supporters and whether the Tinubu administration can defend its record will likely determine the contours of that contest. For now, both sides appear committed to fighting not just over future policies but over competing narratives of the recent past, suggesting Nigerian voters face years of heated political rhetoric before the next trip to the polls.
