President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party and ex-governor of old Gongola State. He was 90 years old.

The elder statesman’s passing marks the end of an era. Through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Tukur’s death as “the end of a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s political and economic history.” The late politician’s distinguished career spanned public administration, governance, industry, politics and pan-African business leadership, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s development.

What made Tukur such a significant figure in Nigerian politics? During the Second Republic, he won election as Governor of old Gongola State, now split into Adamawa and Taraba States, in 1983. Years later, he served as PDP National Chairman from March 2012 to January 2014, leading the party through a critical period.

On the continental stage, Tukur championed Africa’s economic renaissance. He was a relentless advocate for intra-African trade, private sector-led growth and sustainable development, believing deeply in Nigeria’s limitless potential.

“Alhaji Tukur was urbane, generous and deeply rooted in the values of integrity and service that the Adamawa Emirate and the nation hold dear,” President Tinubu said. The President extended condolences to the Tukur family, the Fombina Emirate of Adamawa, Adamawa State’s government and people, and the entire political and business communities across Nigeria and Africa. His wise counsel and fatherly guidance will be sorely missed.
