NANS Approves Mass Protests Over Ongoing ASUU Strike in Ondo State Universities

Nigerian students are preparing for widespread demonstrations after their national body approved coordinated protests against prolonged strikes crippling universities across multiple states. The National Association of Nigerian Students has granted clearance to campus leaders in Ondo, Niger, Nasarawa, and other affected states to begin what they’re calling the “mother of all protests.”

What triggered this anger? Lecturers at three Ondo State universities have been on strike for two months over unpaid salaries and the state government’s failure to implement the 2025 FG-ASUU agreement. Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo, and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology in Okitipupa remain shuttered.

NANS National President Afeez Akinteye minced no words. Speaking after returning from a leadership conference in Ghana, he declared the continuous disruption shameful and intolerable. “Nigerian students have suffered enough,” Akinteye stated, demanding urgent action and respect for students’ time and futures.

The association has ordered a nationwide relocation of its leadership to university campuses starting next week. The move signals an escalation in student activism at a time when academic calendars across the country face mounting uncertainty.
