Wike Says Amaechi Made Mistake Joining ADC, Claims He Would Have Warned Former Governor Against Party Switch

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has broken his silence on the political misfortune of his former principal, Chibuike Amaechi, claiming the former Transport Minister’s ill fated bid for the African Democratic Congress presidential ticket could have been avoided with a simple phone call. Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Wike revealed he would have counselled Amaechi against joining the ADC had he been consulted, describing the party as a carefully orchestrated vehicle designed to deliver the presidential nomination to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Wike, who served as Chief of Staff during Amaechi’s tenure as Rivers State Governor, offered an unexpectedly sympathetic assessment of his political rival’s recent electoral defeat. Amaechi joined the ADC earlier this year amid considerable fanfare, declaring his intention to contest the 2027 presidency. However, his campaign ended in bitter disappointment when he lost the party’s primary election to Atiku, a result he immediately contested by alleging widespread electoral malpractice and irregularities. Since receiving a visit from Atiku at his Abuja residence, Amaechi has remained notably silent on his plans to challenge the outcome.

The relationship between Wike and Amaechi has long been characterized as one of the most acrimonious political feuds in contemporary Nigerian politics, making the FCT Minister’s conciliatory tone all the more striking. Despite their well documented differences, Wike insisted he still regards Amaechi as his brother and would have helped him avoid what he characterized as a predetermined outcome. According to Wike, the presence of David Mark as ADC national chairman should have served as a clear warning signal about how the primaries would unfold.

Wike offered a pointed critique of the ADC’s internal processes, suggesting the party lacked transparency and due process from the outset. He claimed his experience working alongside Mark in previous political contexts gave him unique insight into how the primaries would be conducted. The FCT Minister painted a picture of Amaechi as a politician in too much of a hurry, swept along by supporters praising the current administration’s performance and eager to capitalize on perceived momentum without properly vetting the political landscape.

The comments provide a rare glimpse into the complex dynamics shaping Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general election. Atiku’s emergence as the ADC flagbearer has significantly altered the opposition landscape, bringing together various political forces seeking to challenge the ruling party. Amaechi’s unsuccessful bid and subsequent silence following Atiku’s visit have fueled speculation about possible reconciliation or strategic realignments within opposition ranks.

Whether Wike’s public assessment of Amaechi’s political miscalculation represents genuine fraternal concern or calculated political positioning remains an open question. As the 2027 election cycle intensifies, the interplay between former allies turned rivals will likely continue shaping coalition building efforts across party lines. Amaechi’s next move, whether challenging the primary results through official channels or seeking accommodation within the ADC structure, could significantly influence opposition unity going into the general election.
