Chinese President Xi Jinping touched down in New Delhi on September 12, 2026, for the 18th BRICS Summit, marking his first visit to India since 2019. The high-profile arrival sets the stage for closely watched talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as both nations attempt to mend relations damaged by the Eastern Ladakh standoff.

The timing couldn’t be more significant. An eight-point consensus reached during recent Special Representatives’ talks has injected fresh hope into the boundary dispute resolution process. Will this summit finally chart a path toward lasting peace between the two Asian giants?

Beyond bilateral matters, the BRICS bloc has reportedly agreed on a joint declaration that won’t name specific countries but will condemn unilateral wars and the imposition of conflict, according to sources familiar with the matter. Leaders from member and partner nations have converged on the Indian capital for the gathering at Bharat Mandapam.

Security remained tight across Delhi. Police mounted units conducted combing operations in the Ridge area while traffic advisories were issued for surrounding areas. Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung and Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Kuchkarov were among other dignitaries who arrived for the summit.

The Modi-Xi meeting represents a critical test of whether Asia’s two largest economies can move past years of military tension along their disputed border.
