Okowa Reveals He Predicted 2023 Presidential Election Loss as Obi’s Benue Visit Sparks Controversy

Ifeanyi Okowa, the Peoples Democratic Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, has made a startling admission that he knew his ticket with Atiku Abubakar was headed for defeat even before Nigerians cast their votes. Speaking at a recent event in Delta State, the former governor revealed he’d already shared this grim forecast with Christian leaders prior to the polls.

“I knew we would not win the election,” Okowa said. His prediction proved accurate. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress the winner, with Atiku placing second and Peter Obi of the Labour Party finishing third, exactly as Okowa had anticipated.

But what does this revelation mean for Nigeria’s political landscape? The admission raises questions about internal party assessments and campaign strategies during one of Nigeria’s most contentious elections.

Meanwhile, Obi himself has become embroiled in fresh controversy. Suspected political thugs blocked his convoy from entering Benue State on Tuesday, disrupting a scheduled visit by the now Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate. Benue State Government initially claimed it wasn’t notified of the visit, but a letter dated September 7, 2026, signed by NDC’s Benue chairman Ohini Ojegbe and acknowledged by police the same day, tells a different story.

The political temperature continues to rise as 2027 approaches.
