Obi Backs Tinubu’s Naira Float Policy as Opposition Coalition Talks Continue

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, has pledged to maintain President Bola Tinubu’s controversial naira float policy if he wins next year’s vote. The announcement marks a surprising alignment with the current administration’s economic strategy, though Obi emphasized his approach would prioritize boosting productivity to strengthen the currency’s value for ordinary Nigerians.

Coalition talks live on. During a recent interview, the NDC candidate rekindled hopes for opposition unity, clarifying that such negotiations must occur between political parties rather than individual leaders. The statement keeps alive speculation about potential alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.

Not everyone in the opposition camp shares the unity vision. Rabiu Kwankwaso, serving as NDC’s Vice-Presidential Candidate, publicly urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his presidential ambitions and focus on traditional responsibilities instead. Atiku currently represents the African Democratic Congress in the race.

Can fragmented opposition parties actually unite before 2027? That question now dominates political discourse as candidates balance personal ambitions against the mathematical reality of vote splitting. The coming months will reveal whether coalition talk translates into concrete electoral partnerships or remains merely rhetorical posturing.
