Joseph diGenova, a longtime Trump ally, has resigned from his Department of Justice position just months after being appointed to investigate alleged criminal conspiracies against the president. The former U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia under President Ronald Reagan submitted his resignation letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche at 3 p.m. ET on September 10.
DiGenova joined the department in April as counselor to the attorney general, leading a probe in the Southern District of Florida. His investigation focused on whether Trump was targeted by political enemies, with some allies hoping it would ensnare former Special Counsel Jack Smith, former CIA Director John Brennan, and former FBI Director James Comey.
The resignation comes as political temperatures continue to rise ahead of the November midterm elections. At a Republican National Committee convention in Dallas, Vice President JD Vance confronted a protester waving Mexican and Palestinian flags during his keynote address Thursday night, telling the heckler, “If you love Mexico so much, get your a– over there.”
DiGenova’s departure follows President Trump’s controversial promise of $5,000 payments to American adults if Republicans retain congressional control. The political landscape remains volatile as both parties gear up for what’s expected to be a contentious midterm battle.
