NNPP Urges Nigerians to Emulate Osun Voter Resilience Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nigerian voters can overcome intimidation, federal pressure, and vote buying if they remain united and determined, according to the national secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Dipo Olayoku pointed to the recent Osun State governorship election as proof that a resolute electorate cannot be broken, urging Nigerians to replicate the same spirit in the 2027 general elections. His comments came during a radio programme on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese Ijebu, where he analyzed the surprising strength shown by Osun voters despite what he described as unprecedented political interference.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party secured a second term in the August 15 election, polling 511,067 votes against the All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who garnered 444,815 votes. Olayoku argued that the outcome demonstrated how voters with clear convictions can resist external manipulation. Osun has built a reputation for rejecting godfather politics, he noted, adding that the state’s voting patterns consistently reflect independent thinking rather than directives from political strongmen. The election result, he suggested, sends a powerful message about the potential of grassroots democracy when citizens stand firm in their choices.

Beyond celebrating the victory, Olayoku highlighted what he considered troubling tactics deployed before and during the electoral process. He cited allegations of intimidation, violence, and vote buying, as well as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s freezing of an Osun State Government account shortly before the poll. President Bola Tinubu later ordered the account unfrozen, but Olayoku questioned why the timing and motivation behind such actions were not subject to greater scrutiny. He also expressed concern about the lack of prosecution for alleged vote buying, referencing a social media post in which a woman allegedly thanked the APC for paying her fifteen thousand naira for her vote.

The NNPP secretary emphasized that voter determination alone is insufficient without vigilance at every stage of the electoral process. He urged Nigerians to remain at polling units and collation centers until votes are counted and results officially declared. Olayoku insisted that protecting votes from the polling booth to the final announcement is essential to preventing manipulation. Without sustained presence and oversight by voters and party agents, even the strongest democratic resolve can be undermined by tampering during the counting and collation phases.

What Nigerians are truly celebrating is not merely the conduct of the election itself but rather the resilience displayed by Osun residents throughout the process, Olayoku clarified. He suggested that the state’s voters faced extraordinary pressure and interference, yet maintained their commitment to their preferred candidate. Anything could have happened given the alleged tactics employed by the APC before election day, he added, making the outcome all the more significant as a testament to popular will. Accord Party supporters faced intimidation in the buildup to the vote, according to Olayoku, who claimed the ruling party did everything possible to prevent Osun people from exercising their democratic rights.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the lessons from Osun take on national significance. Political analysts suggest that voter apathy and manipulation have long plagued Nigerian democracy, making examples of determined civic participation particularly valuable. If replicated across the country, the Osun model could fundamentally alter electoral dynamics and force political parties to focus more on genuine popular appeal rather than relying on intimidation and financial inducements. Whether Nigerian voters in other states can summon the same level of organization and resolve remains to be seen, but Olayoku’s call represents a growing sentiment among opposition figures that grassroots mobilization offers the best path to meaningful political ce.
