Political signals ahead of the 2027 general elections intensified as President Bola Tinubu and governors under the Progressive Governors Forum PGF engaged leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC at a high level summit in the Presidential Villa. The meeting, hosted by the Progressive Governors with Tinubu as Special Guest of Honour, began at the State House Banquet Hall and is seen by observers as a crucial strategic dialogue amid economic pressures and political recalibration.
The summit provides a platform for dialogue between the Federal Government, state governors, and organised labour, signalling a willingness to align governance priorities with workers’ interests. NLC leaders are expected to present their charter of demands, which includes wage increases, protection of jobs and livelihoods, creation of a dedicated Just Transition Fund, green job creation, resing programmes, strengthened social protection, and institutionalised tripartite dialogue between government, employers, and labour.
Sources told us that the summit is pivotal given recent tensions over wages, inflation, and economic reforms. Labour leaders emphasised the need for guarantees protecting workers from layoffs linked to economic and climate transitions, investment in renewable energy and sustainable industries to generate union protected jobs, and expanded social safety nets, including pensions, healthcare access, and unemployment support.
Observers note that the meeting could also influence political alignment ahead of 2027, as the NLC, with millions of members across strategic sectors, remains a powerful mobilisation bloc capable of shaping public opinion. A labour leader stated, “Direct engagement at Aso Rock signals an attempt to reset the narrative or prevent escalation. Labour is a decisive political force heading into 2027 elections. Governors’ involvement signals coordinated political alignment, and the outcome may determine if negotiation replaces street protests as the main channel of labour influence.”
The summit underscores the administration’s recognition of labour as a key stakeholder in national development and a political factor that could impact the lead up to the next general elections.
