A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Iyabo Obasanjo, has expressed concerns about the process that produced the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election, alleging that some of her supporters were assaulted.

Her reaction follows the endorsement of Solomon Adeola by Governor Dapo Abiodun as the party’s preferred candidate during a caucus meeting held in Abeokuta on April 13, 2026.

In a statement released on Thursday, Obasanjo said she had initially supported the idea of adopting a consensus candidate, describing it as a strategy to reduce internal tensions and strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 elections. She noted that she accepted the outcome and suspended her governorship ambition after Adeola’s emergence.

“I immediately congratulated him and stepped down in line with my commitment to party unity and respect for collective decisions,” she stated.

However, she raised concerns about how the process was carried out, claiming that some of her supporters were denied access to the meeting venue, while two were allegedly assaulted by a party official. According to her, such incidents contradict the principles of discipline and mutual respect expected within the party.

Obasanjo also criticised what she described as a lack of recognition for other aspirants present at the meeting, including Tunde Lemo. She said their contributions and grassroots engagements across the state were not acknowledged.

Despite the grievances, she reaffirmed her loyalty to the APC and pledged support for both the party’s candidate and President Bola Tinubu. She urged party leaders to ensure more inclusive and transparent processes in the future.
