Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has advised young workers struggling with soaring rental costs to remain with parents or relatives rather than committing to housing they cannot comfortably afford. Speaking during a Thursday question and answer session with Nigeria Info FM, Hamzat urged young Nigerians, particularly those at the beginning of their careers, to make housing decisions based on their earnings and overall financial capacity.
Hamzat’s comments came while addressing concerns about how a 22 year old earning N100,000 monthly could afford a self contained apartment or mini flat that costs approximately N1 million in annual rent. The deputy governor emphasized that young people should not feel compelled to move into independent accommodation immediately after securing employment, especially when their income cannot support the cost.
Drawing on cultural practices and international examples including Turkey, Hamzat said there was nothing wrong with sharing accommodation or living with family members while elishing financial ility. He noted that workers should avoid allocating more than 40 percent of their income to rent, as other essential expenses including food, clothing, and transportation must also be covered.
The deputy governor encouraged young workers to start modestly and gradually upgrade their accommodation as their income improves, emphasizing the importance of financial prudence over social pressure to maintain independent residences beyond their means.
