Nigeria’s governance crisis has intensified as a retired Professor of Botany at Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof Omotoye Olorode, declared that the ruling class has become an enemy of ordinary Nigerians. Speaking at the second Osun State University annual lecture on Thursday, Olorode warned that Nigeria has transformed into a bourgeoise state, highlighting deepening inequality and systematic s on public institutions.

Olorode traced the origins of Nigeria’s educational crisis to s on public sector institutions and trade unions between 1978 and 1988. He criticized attempts to demobilize public universities in favor of private ones, arguing that demands for university autonomy and academic freedom should not be misconstrued as elitist requests. The professor cautioned against copying developed countries that themselves face significant societal challenges, linking such policies to rising insecurity across the nation.

Meanwhile, political tensions escalated as the Presidency sharply criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for promising to restore fuel subsis if elected in 2027. Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare accused Atiku of hypocrisy and attempting to manipulate voters, describing the proposal as designed to hoodwink unsuspecting Nigerians and halt ongoing economic recovery efforts.

These parallel controversies underscore broader concerns about governance, public policy direction, and the widening gap between Nigeria’s leadership and citizens. As the 2027 elections approach, debates over economic policy and institutional integrity appear poised to dominate national discourse.
