The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Tijani, has announced a comprehensive reform agenda aimed at strengthening public safety, boosting accountability, and deepening community engagement across the state.

Speaking during his inaugural address at the command headquarters in Ikeja, Tijani described policing in Lagos as complex due to the state’s fast growing and dynamic nature. He emphasized that addressing security challenges would require innovative strategies, professionalism, and collaboration.

According to Tijani, modern policing must evolve in response to technological advancements and emerging crime patterns. He stressed the importance of adopting digital tools to enhance intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and operational efficiency. He noted that technology driven policing would play a central role in tackling contemporary threats.

The police chief also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between the police and other security agencies, including the military and intelligence services. He explained that coordinated efforts are essential for effectively responding to crime and maintaining order in a megacity like Lagos.

Community policing, he said, would remain a major priority under his leadership. Tijani called on residents to partner with law enforcement agencies by sharing information and supporting efforts to maintain peace and security. He also underscored the importance of engaging young people, noting that youth inclusion is key to preventing crime and fostering social ility.

On professionalism, Tijani issued a strong warning against misconduct within the force. He reaffirmed his commitment to discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights, stating that officers would be held accountable for any violations. He made it clear that unprofessional behavior, including brutality, would not be tolerated.

To improve service delivery, Tijani announced plans to enhance training, welfare, and capacity building for officers. He said a well trained and motivated police force is crucial for effective policing.

The commissioner also outlined key operational priorities such as increasing police visibility, targeting crime hotspots, and strengthening rapid response systems. He added that recruitment and retention efforts would be improved to ensure a more efficient workforce.

Encouraging transparency, Tijani urged residents to report complaints through official channels, including the Police Complaint Response Unit, assuring them of prompt attention.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, who has been promoted to Assistant Inspector General, expressed confidence in Tijani’s ability to sustain and improve security in the state.
