A major political row has erupted over claims that Northern Nigeria’s electoral preferences can be predetermined, with the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement delivering a stinging rebuke to former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff. The controversy centres on recent remarks by Sheriff suggesting that Labour Party leader Peter Obi has no meaningful political future in the region, comments that have triggered accusations of political gatekeeping and disrespect for voter independence.
In a strongly worded statement released Wednesday by spokesperson Habibu Sale Mohammed Mailemo, the movement declared categorically that the North is not the personal political estate of any individual. Millions of Nigerians and free spirited Northerners were disappointed by Sheriff’s comments, according to the statement, which described the remarks as both unfounded and reflective of a patronising attitude towards Northern voters. The movement argued that such statements suggest millions of citizens are incapable of making independent political decisions without approval from a few self appointed political gatekeepers.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement pointed to the 2023 presidential election as evidence that regional voting patterns cannot be controlled by political elites. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the movement’s national leader, had previously observed that election results clearly disproved claims that any candidate is incapable of attracting support across regional boundaries. Votes cast across Northern Nigeria reflected the constitutional freedom of citizens to support candidates of their choice, the statement emphasised. Attempts to rewrite this political reality neither serve democracy nor promote national unity, but instead encourage unnecessary divisions at a time when Nigerians expect their leaders to focus on pressing national challenges.
Beyond the immediate political theatre, the movement shifted focus to what it considers the real priorities facing ordinary Nigerians. Rising cost of living, widespread insecurity, youth unemployment, declining purchasing power, deteriorating education standards and access to quality healthcare were cited as issues deserving serious political engagement. These bread and butter concerns, the statement argued, matter far more to the average Nigerian than narratives seeking to define the political choices of millions of voters based on regional origin or ethnic affiliation.
According to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, genuine political leadership must be earned through ideas, credibility, performance and the confidence of the electorate rather than through media declarations or claims of regional ownership. Democracy thrives when citizens are free to choose and when political parties compete on the strength of their ideas and records, the statement declared. History has shown that Nigerians are increasingly independent in their political judgment, and no amount of rhetoric can substitute for the verdict of the ballot box.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum, the movement has called on political leaders across the country to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid statements capable of creating regional or political divisions. Politicians must embrace civility, respect democratic competition and allow citizens to freely choose candidates without intimidation or condescension. Whether this appeal will temper the heated rhetoric expected in the coming campaign season remains to be seen, but the confrontation signals that assumptions about regional voting blocs will face increasingly vocal challenges from movements demanding respect for electoral independence.
