Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has paid glowing tribute to his late mother, Mrs Rose Diri, describing her as a virtuous woman whose kindness and impact on others remain unforgettable.
The governor spoke during the 13th memorial service held in her honour at Ayamasa in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri said mothers occupy a special place in the hearts of their children because of the love, care and warmth they provide throughout life.
He explained that his late mother positively influenced not only her children but also many people who came in contact with her during her lifetime.
“Mothers occupy very special places in our hearts. We were indeed very close to our mother,” the governor said during the service.
He added that people are remembered for the impact they make while alive and noted that the memory of his mother has remained evergreen since her passing in 2013.
Governor Diri stated that he and his siblings had quietly observed the memorial every year on May 15, but this year’s gathering attracted dignitaries from across the country.
The well attended memorial service included the presence of Deputy Governor Peter Akpe and his wife, alongside lawmakers, political leaders and top government officials.
Among those present were Senator Konbowei Benson, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Heineken Lokpobiri, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Abraham Ingobere, former Deputy Governor Peremobowei Ebebi and former APC governorship candidate Chief David Lyon.
Also in attendance were former DSS Director General Matthew Seiyefa, former presidential adviser Kingsley Kuku and senior police officials.
During the memorial service, Governor Diri read from 2 Timothy 4:6 to 8, while Reverend Godspower Asingba delivered a sermon encouraging people to live exemplary lives that would positively impact others.
Wreaths were later laid at the tomb of Mrs Rose Diri by the governor and members of the family.
