The Arewa Youth Assembly has declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu completing an eight year tenure, urging Northern politicians to refrain from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued by its Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, the group stressed that there is no vacancy in Aso Rock until May 29, 2031. It argued that Nigeria’s informal zoning and rotational presidency arrangement must be respected to preserve national unity and political ility.
The Assembly noted that the North benefitted from a similar understanding during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who completed two terms without significant opposition from Southern political actors.
According to the group, any attempt by Northern aspirants to contest in 2027 would be seen as a violation of this arrangement and could undermine national cohesion. It warned that such moves would face resistance from youths across the region.
Beyond politics, the Assembly expressed support for the Tinubu administration’s economic and security policies. It pointed to reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and exce rate unification as steps that are beginning to yield positive results, including improvements in external reserves and fiscal ility.
On security, the group commended ongoing military operations and intelligence coordination, particularly in tackling banditry and securing the release of abducted victims in Northern Nigeria. It also praised Nuhu Ribadu for his role in strengthening national security efforts.
However, the Assembly advised government officials to improve communication with citizens, especially at the grassroots level, to ensure that the benefits of reforms are clearly understood and appreciated by the public.
Describing the 2027 election as a referendum on continuity, the group pledged unwavering support for Tinubu’s re election bid, emphasizing that national interest should take precedence over regional or personal ambitions.
