South Korea’s Art Scene Poised for Global Breakthrough as Creative Industries Align

While Korean pop culture has conquered American aunces through music, film and streaming series like Squid Game, the nation’s fine art scene is quietly building its own path to international recognition. The question many are asking: can Korean painters and sculptors replicate the success of their entertainment industry counterparts?

Kristian Baumann, a Seoul-born chef now based in Copenhagen, believes the answer lies in Korea’s interconnected creative ecosystem. “These creative industries are all deeply connected to our culture, so when people discover one aspect, they do a deep dive into its traditions,” he tells observers. The result is what he calls a domino effect across food, beauty, entertainment and fine art.

Artists like Kimsooja, Do Ho Suh, Haegue Yang and Lee Bul are leading a reconstruction movement focused on large-scale installations combining industrial materials with cutting-edge technology. Can Yang, CEO of Seoul-based gaming company DRX, notes that Korean artists now develop work for both domestic and international aunces simultaneously, a shift from the previous export-oriented approach.

Seoul’s position as the cultural epicenter continues to strengthen as cross-disciplinary collaborations between musicians, game developers, filmmakers and visual artists become increasingly common. The city’s infrastructure and international aunce make it uniquely positioned to showcase this evolving creative landscape.
