Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has expressed support for the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as consistent with fairness and power sharing principles.
Kwankwaso made the remarks during the party’s national convention in Abuja, where he addressed delegates, supporters, and key stakeholders. He noted that the zoning arrangement aligns with existing party agreements and reflects efforts to promote national balance.
According to him, the decision allows the southern region to complete an eight year cycle before the presidency shifts back to the North in 2031.
He urged party members and Nigerians at large to take part in the ongoing mobilisation drive ahead of the 2027 general elections, encouraging increased registration and participation.
The zoning resolution was formally adopted during the convention following a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State.
Announcing the decision, the National Chairman of the party, Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement is part of a broader power sharing formula designed to balance regional interests within the opposition coalition.
He further explained that after the completion of the southern tenure, the presidential ticket would rotate back to the northern region in line with the party’s zoning structure.
The party’s National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of the National Working Committee during the convention, strengthening its internal leadership structure ahead of the elections.
The zoning decision is expected to benefit southern aspirants, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who is seen as a major contender for the party’s presidential ticket.
Kwankwaso and Obi both formally joined the NDC during the event in Abuja, where they called on members to avoid internal divisions and focus on national development goals.
Obi stated that their decision to align with the party was driven by the need for a le political platform capable of avoiding internal crises and promoting unity.
The development comes amid increasing political realignments across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition leaders intensify efforts to build a stronger coalition against the ruling party.
