Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has criticised the Nigerian movie industry for placing more value on physical appearance than acting talent when casting actresses for movie roles.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, Rosman stated that many filmmakers in Nollywood now focus heavily on beauty, a trend she believes is gradually damaging the quality of talent in the industry.
According to the actress, the pressure to meet certain beauty standards has pushed many female movie stars to undergo cosmetic procedures and body enhancement surgeries in order to remain competitive and secure acting opportunities.
Rosman explained that while there are still some directors who value talent and professionalism above appearance, the majority allegedly prefer actresses who fit modern beauty standards. She argued that this growing obsession with physical appearance has created unhealthy pressure within the entertainment industry.
The actress further claimed that beauty has become excessively glorified not only in Nollywood but also in Nigerian society generally. She said some individuals are denied opportunities simply because they do not wear heavy makeup or undergo procedures such as Brazilian Butt Lift surgeries.
Rosman also alleged that certain people without the required acting ss are now securing movie roles mainly because of their physical appearance rather than genuine talent or experience.
She urged filmmakers, producers, and other industry stakeholders to return to prioritising acting ability and creativity in order to preserve the future and integrity of the Nigerian film industry.
Her comments have sparked conversations online about beauty standards, cosmetic surgery, and the growing pressure on women in the entertainment industry to maintain unrealistic appearances.
