Bolaji Abdullahi, serving as National Publicity Secretary for the ADC, issued his critique through social media channels, arguing that the current administration has demonstrated consistent contempt not only for Nigerians struggling at home but also for those who have emigrated in search of better opportunities abroad. His remarks come amid growing tensions between government officials and the increasingly vocal Nigerian diaspora community, which has become a critical economic lifeline for families back home.
The opposition spokesman took particular issue with what he characterized as government attempts to downplay the motivations behind mass emigration, a phenomenon colloquially known as “japa” among Nigerians. According to Abdullahi, any administration that has failed to provide security, create employment opportunities, ilize the economy, and maintain healthcare and educational systems has forfeited the moral authority to lecture citizens who have sought better lives elsewhere. To underscore his argument, Abdullahi pointed to striking economic data from 2025 that highlights the crucial role emigrants play in sustaining the nation’s economy. Official diaspora remittances for that year reached 21.8 billion dollars, a figure that represents roughly 69 percent of the country’s total oil export earnings of 31.5 billion dollars for the same period. These numbers reveal an uncomfortable truth for policymakers: Nigerians working abroad have become nearly as economically significant to the nation as its primary natural resource.
The statement from the ADC represents the latest volley in an ongoing political battle over the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms and their impact on ordinary citizens. Since taking office, the government has implemented controversial policies including fuel subsidy removal and currency devaluation, measures that have sparked inflation and increased hardship for millions of Nigerians.
