Former National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Ladipo Johnson, has resigned his membership of the party as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
Johnson announced his resignation in a letter dated May 4, 2026, addressed to the chairman of NNPP Ward G1 in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos. In the letter, he stated that his resignation takes immediate effect and explained that his decision was driven by the need for a broader opposition alliance in the country.
According to Johnson, the current political climate requires opposition parties and leaders to unite in order to present a stronger national alternative. He said his political journey must now focus on promoting a more united opposition platform capable of serving the interests of Nigerians.
The former NNPP spokesman expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve in several leadership positions, including National Auditor and National Publicity Secretary. He also thanked members of the party’s National Working Committee for their support and cooperation during his tenure.
Although Johnson did not officially announce his next political destination, sources within the NNPP indicated that he may join the Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and other members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Party insiders suggested that Johnson’s close political relationship with Kwankwaso made the move expected. Reports also indicate that discussions are ongoing regarding a possible leadership or publicity role for him within the NDC structure, particularly in the South West region.
The development comes shortly after former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC in Abuja. Both politicians reportedly called for unity among opposition figures and urged members to avoid internal conflicts as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
