United States President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over her refusal to support involvement in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, creating fresh diplomatic tension between the long time allies.

In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Trump expressed disappointment in Meloni, questioning her stance and accusing her of lacking courage. His remarks came amid growing disagreements over the war in the Middle East, which reportedly began following joint actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran.

The criticism followed Meloni’s earlier condemnation of Trump’s comments directed at Pope Leo XIV, who has consistently called for peace and an end to the conflict. Trump responded by labeling Meloni’s position as unacceptable, further escalating tensions.

Despite being considered one of Trump’s closest allies in Europe, Meloni has maintained that Italy will not be drawn into the war, emphasizing the nation’s interests and constitutional stance against conflict. Her position has drawn both domestic and international reactions.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani defended the prime minister, stating that Italy remains committed to Western unity while prioritizing mutual respect and national interest. He noted that Meloni is known for speaking her mind and standing firm on key issues.

Opposition leader Elly Schlein also weighed in, condemning Trump’s remarks as a serious lack of respect. She reiterated that Italy’s constitution rejects war, reinforcing the country’s long standing commitment to peace.

The exce highlights a rare public rift between Washington and Rome, raising questions about the future of transatlantic cooperation as global tensions continue to rise.
