The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has uncovered a network of caves and underground tunnels used as drug hideouts in the Rimin Kebe area of Kano.
This was disclosed in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, who said the discovery was made during a major operation tagged Operation Sharar Mafaka. The exercise forms part of intensified efforts to combat illicit drug activities across the state.
According to the statement, the Kano State Commander of the NDLEA, Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, said the breakthrough followed credible intelligence and sustained surveillance by operatives. Acting on the information, officers stormed the Rimin Kebe enclave on May 4, where they uncovered multiple caves adapted as shelters and operational bases for suspected drug dealers.
Investigations revealed that some of the caves were fully furnished with household items such as mats, pillows, food flasks, plates and cutlery, suggesting that the spaces were regularly occupied and used for organised drug trade. Authorities also observed that several tunnels appeared to be under construction, potentially linking different hideouts underground.
The NDLEA confirmed that a number of the caves and tunnels have already been dismantled, while plans are underway to demolish and secure the remaining structures to prevent further use by criminal elements.
Yahaya Lawal reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and abuse in Kano State, warning that operatives would continue to track down offenders regardless of their hiding places. He urged those involved in illicit drug activities to desist, stressing that the agency remains resolute in its mission.
The operation aligns with the directive of the NDLEA Chairman, Mohamed Buba Marwa, to dismantle drug networks nationwide. Authorities also called on residents to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing enforcement efforts.
Officials say the crackdown marks a significant step in curbing substance abuse and strengthening public safety in the state.
