The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has detained two suspected armed robbers and recovered an automatic rifle during an operation in the Mkpat Enin area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Uyo. She said the operation was carried out following credible intelligence provided by members of the public.

According to the statement, operatives conducted a targeted raid on the hideout of a notorious robbery suspect in Mkpat Enin on Wednesday. However, the principal suspect reportedly fled the scene upon sighting police officers and escaped arrest.

Two other suspects found at the premises were apprehended after a brief chase by the operatives.

During the raid, officers recovered one automatic pump action rifle, a locally fabricated shotgun, four machetes and substances suspected to be hemp along with other illicit drugs.

The police spokesperson noted that the arrested suspects have provided useful information regarding the gang’s activities and operations. She added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and dismantle any criminal network linked to him.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely information to security agencies to help curb criminal activities in their communities.

The latest operation forms part of intensified security measures aimed at tackling armed robbery and other violent crimes across Akwa Ibom State.
