The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has seized 64 bags of suspected cannabis sativa concealed in a cement-laden trailer along the Zaria to Kano Road and arrested the driver.

State Commander Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal disclosed the operation in a statement issued on Friday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASN Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari. The seizure, conducted on February 2, was part of the agency’s sustained efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse across Kano State.

The trailer, reportedly carrying Dangote cement, had departed Obajana in Kogi State and was en route to Mubi in Adamawa when intercepted by officers of the Kiru Area Command following intelligence-led surveillance and monitoring. The driver is currently in NDLEA custody pending further investigation.

Commander Yahaya-Lawal noted that the drugs were hidden within legitimate cargo and are believed to have been intended for distribution in Kano ahead of the Ramadan period. “We will not allow drug traffickers to endanger the safety and spiritual wellbeing of our communities,” he said.

In line with directives from NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, the Kano Command will intensify patrols, reinforce checkpoints, and sustain intelligence-driven operations across the state. Investigation into the network behind the shipment is ongoing, with efforts to apprehend other collaborators and facilitators.

The NDLEA has also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suious activities to the nearest NDLEA office or via official channels. Yahaya-Lawal emphasized that community cooperation is essential to safeguarding citizens and maintaining peace, particularly during religious observances.
