The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, initially scheduled for February 21, citing the observance of Ramadan.
In a letter dated January 22 and signed by the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and National Secretary, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, the ADC highlighted that the current election date coincides with the Ramadan fast, which is likely to be observed by a portion of the electorate. The party stressed that the cultural and religious significance of the period could affect voter participation.
“It is necessary to request a reconsideration of the election date to safeguard inclusion, participation, and fairness for voters across the territory during the Ramadan period,” the party said in the letter, urging INEC to shift the elections to a date after Ramadan.
The ADC noted that the request is guided by the need to ensure inclusivity and protect citizens’ constitutional rights. The party emphasized that its engagement with the electoral commission is institutional and that it is committed to complying with due process, seeking guidance on procedural requirements for formally submitting such applications.
The letter further stated that electoral legitimacy is strengthened when processes encourage broad participation, promote diversity, and reinforce public confidence in democratic institutions. By proposing a date adjustment, the ADC aims to ensure that all eligible voters can exercise their franchise without facing religious or cultural constraints.
