The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party Nigeria has announced that expression of interest and nomination forms will be issued free of charge to all aspirants seeking to contest elective positions under its platform.
The State Chairman, Alexander Umbugu, made the announcement on Friday while speaking with journalists, explaining that the decision is aimed at reducing the financial burden on aspiring candidates and promoting inclusiveness in the political process.
Umbugu stated that the party believes politics should not be limited to wealthy individuals, adding that leadership should be accessible to citizens regardless of their economic background. He said the party structure is designed to reflect ordinary Nigerians, referencing the party’s symbolic logo representing a family unit.
According to him, the Labour Party had previously adopted the same approach during the 2023 elections, where several candidates reportedly contested and won elections without paying for nomination forms.
He further explained that in contrast to other political parties that impose high fees for elective positions, the Labour Party seeks to encourage participation by removing financial barriers. He argued that excessive nomination fees often push politicians into corruption once elected, as they attempt to recover campaign expenses.
Umbugu noted that in some parties, nomination forms for positions such as House of Representatives, Senate, and governorship can cost millions of naira, describing the trend as unhealthy for democratic development.
The chairman also reaffirmed his loyalty to the Abure led faction of the party and expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would resolve the ongoing leadership dispute in favour of Barrister Julius Abure.
He added that the party’s executive in the state was properly constituted through congresses held in December 2025 and confirmed that preparations are underway for upcoming primaries, including the bye election for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
The Labour Party in Nasarawa State says its goal is to deepen internal democracy and ensure that credible candidates emerge to represent the party in future elections.
