National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has insisted that the party remains strong and united despite ongoing leadership disputes and controversies surrounding the alleged distribution of fake nomination forms.
Usman made the remarks while addressing journalists after the screening of aspirants for various elective positions in Abuja on Wednesday. She described the exercise as successful and encouraging, noting that many Nigerians are still showing strong interest in contesting elections under the Labour Party platform.
“We started yesterday, and I’m happy that it has been a wonderful exercise,” she said.
Speaking on the strength of the party, Usman stated that the large number of aspirants seeking nomination forms proves that the Labour Party remains relevant and attractive ahead of future elections.
“I don’t think the party is weak at all because, judging from the number of people indicating interest in using the party as a platform to contest elections, the party is still strong,” she added.
Reacting to reports that former National Chairman Julius Abure was allegedly distributing free nomination forms, Usman described the action as illegal. She said the current leadership was surprised by the development, especially after the Supreme Court ruling that reportedly confirmed Abure’s tenure had expired.
According to her, the names currently on the INEC website are those elected during the party’s convention in Umuahia.
She revealed that the matter had already been reported to the Inspector General of Police, the Department of State Services DSS, and INEC.
Usman also warned party supporters and aspirants against purchasing fake nomination forms from unauthorized individuals, saying some people had already been deceived.
On the Labour Party presidential ticket, she disclosed that three aspirants had already obtained nomination forms. She added that the party had agreed that its next presidential candidate should emerge from the South.
“We are hoping for consensus, but whoever emerges will go through a thorough screening process. I assure Nigerians the primaries will be free and fair,” she said.
Senator Enyinaya Abaribe and House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh also expressed confidence in the party’s chances in Abia State ahead of future elections.
