Former Anambra State Governor and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday underwent screening by the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the party’s 2027 presidential primaries, declaring that his priority remains rebuilding Nigeria rather than focusing on political rivals.

Obi was screened at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja by a committee chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor, Sam Egwu. The exercise reportedly lasted more than two hours after the former governor arrived shortly after members of the panel had taken their seats.

Speaking with journalists after the screening, Obi dismissed reports claiming that he had already emerged as the party’s consensus presidential candidate. According to him, the process remains open and democratic, stressing that he only obtained the expression of interest form like every other aspirant.

He praised the NDC leadership for conducting what he described as a transparent and credible exercise, adding that the party was demonstrating true democratic values by following due process.

Obi also reacted to speculations that former President Goodluck Jonathan might join the presidential race, saying he was not concerned about who else could contest the election. He explained that democracy allows individuals to present themselves for service and seek the support of voters.

The former governor stated that his focus is on building a better Nigeria anchored on security, unity, economic growth, and inclusive governance. He said Nigerians deserve a country where citizens can travel freely without fear and where children can attend school safely.

Obi further stressed the need to tackle poverty, hunger, insecurity, and corruption, arguing that public resources should serve the interests of ordinary Nigerians rather than a privileged few.

According to him, millions of Nigerians struggle daily to survive, and urgent reforms are needed to improve living conditions across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
