The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the presidential and national assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will hold on March 6, 2027. The announcement was made by INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan during a press conference at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

INEC emphasized that voter registration is a crucial step for citizens to exercise their electoral rights. The first phase of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) began with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, followed by in-person registration across all 774 local government areas and the Federal Capital Territory, concluding on December 10, 2025. The second phase started on January 5, 2026, and is expected to run until April 17, 2026.

Eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above can register for a Permanent Voter Card (PVC), update details, transfer polling units, or replace lost cards via the official portal: www.cvr.inecnigeria.org
. First-time registrants must create an account, fill out personal and residential details, upload two passport photographs, and schedule a biometric appointment at the nearest INEC center. After biometrics, a Temporary Voter Card (TVC) is issued, which must be presented to collect the permanent PVC, typically within 1–3 months.

INEC also provides an online verification tool for voters to check registration status using their Voter Identification Number (VIN) or name and date of birth. The commission warned that inaccurate information, incorrect polling units, or missed registration updates could cause issues on election day.

By encouraging timely registration and verification, INEC aims to ensure a smooth electoral process and empower citizens to participate actively in the upcoming 2026 off-cycle and 2027 general elections.
