How New England’s Forests Rose From the Ashes of 19th Century Destruction

Amid the sobering realities of climate ce, a remarkable environmental success story has been unfolding across New England for more than a century. Forests that were decimated by colonial expansion and industrial ambition have staged a comeback so dramatic that Massachusetts, now the third most densely populated state in America, is 60 percent forested today. Understanding how this happened, and what it means for our climate future, has become a focus for leading scientists working at the intersection of ecology and atmospheric science.

Bill Moomaw, an emeritus professor at Tufts University and distinguished visiting scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center, has spent decades studying this transformation. As a lead author of several Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Ce reports, contributing to work that earned the organization a share of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize alongside former Vice President Al Gore, Moomaw brings uncommon authority to the subject. His research reveals that the story of American forests is one of catastrophic loss followed by unexpected regeneration, a trajectory with profound implications for how we approach carbon sequestration today.

When European colonists first arrived in North America, they viewed the continent’s vast forests as both obstacle and resource. John Winthrop, arriving aboard the Mayflower, reportedly described the land as a wilderness filled with savages and wild beasts, reflecting a mindset that would shape environmental policy for centuries. The tallest white pines were reserved by royal decree for British naval masts, intended to give Her Majesty’s ships an advantage over Spanish vessels. Beyond these trophy trees, forests were simply cleared to make way for agriculture and villages designed to resemble the English countryside the settlers had left behind.

By 1850, the destruction had reached staggering proportions. New England was approximately 80 percent deforested, with some areas losing 90 to 100 percent of their tree cover. Entire hemlock forests were felled solely for their bark, which contained tannin used in leather tanning, while the remaining timber was simply burned in massive conflagrations that raged across states like New Hampshire. Between 1850 and 1900, the expansion of railroads accelerated the devastation, as wood was needed both to fuel steam engines and to create ties for the rapidly expanding rail network. What Americans celebrated as industrialization was, from an ecological perspective, a systematic dismantling of one of the continent’s most important natural resources.

Recovery began slowly in the early 20th century, catalyzed by cing agricultural patterns and evolving forestry practices. When the Ohio territories and other western lands opened for farming, many New England farmers abandoned their rocky, difficult plots and moved west in search of better soil. Around the same time, Gifford Pinchot, who would become the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service, returned from Europe with knowledge of sustainable forest management techniques that had allowed European woodlands to serve as renewable resources for centuries. These dual forces, agricultural migration and scientific forestry, created conditions for forests to reclaim land that had been stripped bare just decades earlier.

Today, forests function as vital carbon sinks, absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide and storing it in wood and soil. As nations grapple with climate ce mitigation strategies, the regrowth of American forests has taken on new significance. During negotiations for the Kyoto Protocol, the United States even proposed that its recovering forests should offset some of the country’s historic carbon emissions, a position that highlighted both the scale of forest recovery and the complexity of international climate accounting. Scientists like Moomaw continue to study how forest regeneration can be optimized and protected, recognizing that maintaining and expanding these natural carbon storage systems represents one of the most effective tools available for addressing global warming. As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, the renaissance of New England’s forests stands as proof that environmental destruction, while easier to accomplish than reversal, need not be permanent.
