9 African Countries With Extremely Low Rainfall

Although no country in Africa is completely without rain, several nations experience extremely low and irregular rainfall due to the influence of massive desert regions such as the Sahara Desert and the Namib Desert. In many of these countries, rainfall is scarce, unpredictable, and limited to short seasonal periods.

Egypt ranks among the driest countries in Africa, with most of its land covered by the Sahara Desert. Rainfall is rare, especially in southern cities like Aswan, where some years pass without any measurable rain. The country depends heavily on the River Nile for water supply and agriculture.

Libya also experiences severe arid conditions. While the Mediterranean coast receives some rainfall, most of the country remains extremely dry. In many desert areas, rain may not fall for years, and when it does, it often evaporates quickly because of the intense heat.

Algeria has a mixed climate, with wetter coastal regions and an extremely dry southern Sahara region. Mauritania and Niger also face limited rainfall, particularly in their northern desert regions where drought and desertification are common challenges.

Chad and Sudan experience similar conditions, especially in their northern territories located within the Sahara and Sahel zones. Rainfall in these areas is minimal and highly unpredictable, making farming difficult.

Namibia is home to the Namib Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. Some coastal regions receive almost no rainfall and rely mainly on coastal fog for moisture. Botswana also experiences low seasonal rainfall due to the dominance of the Kalahari Desert.

These countries continue to face serious environmental and water challenges linked to climate conditions, desert expansion, and unreliable rainfall patterns.
