Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has expressed deep sorrow over the death of her colleague and friend, actor Alexx Ekubo, revealing that she made efforts to reconnect with him shortly before his passing.
The death of Alex Ekubo was confirmed on Tuesday by several colleagues in the entertainment industry, including Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnakwe, sending shockwaves across Nollywood and among fans.
In an emotional tribute shared via her Instagram story, Akindele wrote that she had tried to reach out to see him one more time but believed he “knew best.” She prayed for his soul to rest in peace and recalled the bond they shared, describing him as someone she fondly called “Ore mi.”
She added that she would always cherish the memories and good times they shared while working together in the film industry.
Bolanle Ninalowo also paid tribute from the United States, writing a short message praying for peace for the deceased actor and comfort for his family.
As of the time of this report, Ekubo’s family has not yet released an official statement confirming details surrounding his death.
His passing comes months after growing concern among fans over his absence from social media and public appearances. The actor had not posted on Instagram since December 2024, fueling speculation about his health.
A viral video that surfaced online in recent months showed Ekubo interacting with children, but fans noted that he appeared noticeably slimmer, which intensified concerns about his wellbeing.
Before his death, Ekubo had also spoken publicly about focusing more on his career and financial growth rather than marriage. His former fiancée, Fancy Acholonu, had earlier revealed in an interview that their relationship ended in 2021 after several years together.
Actor Ikechukwu Ogbonna had previously reassured fans that Ekubo was in good health, explaining that he had simply taken time away from social media and public life to focus on personal matters and close relationships.
The news of his death has continued to generate tributes from colleagues, fans, and industry stakeholders who describe him as a talented and charismatic figure in Nollywood.
