A bitter dispute over allegations of electoral manipulation has erupted within the African Democratic Congress following the resignation of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, who claims the presidential primary that produced Atiku Abubakar was rigged. The former vice president’s camp has fired back with a forceful rebuttal, demanding concrete evidence and accusing Lawal of manufacturing grievances based on political disappointment rather than factual irregularities.
Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku, issued a detailed statement on Monday dismissing Lawal’s accusations as baseless and devoid of substantiation. According to Shaibu, Lawal has failed to provide any documentation, witness testimony, or verifiable facts that would lend credibility to his claims of a manipulated process. The primary in question was conducted across thousands of wards nationwide and produced what Atiku’s team describes as a clear and decisive result. Shaibu emphasized that speculation cannot substitute for evidence in serious allegations that strike at the heart of democratic processes.
Pointing to apparent contradictions in Lawal’s position, the Atiku camp highlighted that the former government official had readily accepted the outcome of the same primary process in Adamawa State, where his cousin Omar Suleiman emerged victorious as the ADC gubernatorial candidate. This selective acceptance of results, Shaibu argued, raises fundamental questions about the credibility of Lawal’s grievances. Nigerians deserve an explanation, the statement suggested, as to why the process was deemed legitimate when it favored Lawal’s family interests but suddenly became fraudulent when it produced a presidential candidate outside his preference.
Beyond the specifics of the dispute, the Atiku camp framed Lawal’s criticism as symptomatic of a deeper misunderstanding about democratic participation. Democracy guarantees the right to compete, Shaibu noted, but it does not guarantee victory to any particular contestant. Disappointment over electoral outcomes, however personally frustrating, cannot be repackaged as evidence of systemic fraud. What appears to have unsettled Lawal, according to this analysis, is not procedural irregularities but simply the fact that his preferred outcome did not materialize. Such reactions, while understandable on a human level, undermine the foundations of competitive politics when dressed up as principled objections.
The statement also carried a warning against allowing internal party disagreements to metastasize into broader ethnic or religious divisions. Nigeria’s political landscape has long been susceptible to narratives that exploit identity fault lines, and Atiku’s team cautioned that injecting such sentiments into what should remain a straightforward political dispute risks deepening societal fractures. Party primaries naturally produce winners and s, but transforming those outcomes into communal grievances threatens the fabric of national cohesion that already faces considerable strain.
Looking ahead, Atiku’s camp insists the former vice president remains laser focused on substantive policy issues rather than intraparty drama. Governance challenges, economic recovery strategies, and national security concerns will define the 2027 election cycle, not the grievances of disappointed aspirants or their surrogates. Ultimately, Nigerian voters rather than disgruntled party members will render the final verdict on presidential candidates. Whether Lawal’s departure and allegations will gain traction beyond immediate political circles remains to be seen, but Atiku’s team clearly believes the burden of proof lies firmly with the accuser, and that burden has not yet been met.
