A Damascus criminal court has sentenced Wassim al Assad, cousin of former Syrian President Bashar al Assad, to death after finding him guilty of premeditated , torture, and inciting civil conflict during Syria’s brutal civil war. The Fourth Criminal Court of Damascus classified his crimes as war crimes and crimes against humanity, marking a significant moment in Syria’s post conflict reckoning.
Born in 1980 in Kardaha, Latakia Province, Wassim al Assad was arrested approximately one year ago near the Syrian Lebanese border. Court proceedings began on June 24, with prosecutors presenting evidence of his involvement in creating armed groups, providing weapons and financing, and participating directly in combat operations after the conflict erupted in 2011. He was also convicted of unlawful imprisonment, torture, and intentionally causing permanent disability.
The court imposed an additional three year prison sentence for fraud and health related offenses, along with a fine of 1,000 Syrian pounds. Authorities have ordered the seizure of all his movable and immovable property. Interestingly, he was acquitted of smuggling and drug trafficking charges due to insufficient evidence, despite previous accusations of extortion, bribery, and narcotics related activities.
Wassim al Assad never held high official positions in the former Syrian government, yet both the United States and European countries had previously placed him on sanctions lists for his activities with armed groups. The verdict signals Syria’s new judicial approach to addressing war era atrocities committed by those connected to the former regime.
