Hayden Panettiere brought her considerable talent to the animated world of American Dad in 2010, voicing a character named Ashley in an episode that showcased the show’s signature dark humor. The Heroes star played a troubled high school student who befriends Steve Smith, the teenage son of the show’s protagonist Stan, in an episode titled Stan’s Food Restaurant.
In the episode’s subplot, Ashley presents herself as a student expelled from her previous school and introduces Steve to her imaginary friend Julia, whom she believes is real. The storyline takes increasingly surreal turns as Ashley becomes convinced Julia has been assaulted and subsequently pregnant, leading Steve to stage an intervention to help Ashley confront reality. The role demonstrated Panettiere’s willingness to tackle challenging material in both live action and voice work.
This American Dad appearance was just one highlight in Panettiere’s extensive voice acting career. She first gained recognition voicing Princess Dot in Pixar’s 1998 hit A Bug’s Life, calling the experience exceptionally exciting. She later lent her voice to characters in Kingdom Hearts, Until Dawn, and numerous other animated projects including Dinosaur and the Alpha and Omega franchise.
Following news of Panettiere’s death, tributes poured in from across Hollywood. Fellow Kingdom Hearts voice actor Alyson Stoner shared an emotional video acknowledging the tremendous loss felt by millions whose lives Panettiere touched throughout her career.
